This course is designed for students who are interested in the fundamentals of Information Technology, including the role and implications of using Information Technology systems and cyber-security threats and how to manage attacks. Students will also develop important skills for creating websites to meet a specific purpose and to manage data through the development of a relational database solution.

Course content:
Year 12
In the Lower Sixth, students will study two units. In the first unit, students will examine relational database development principles to understand the importance of data storage and normalisation techniques and apply their skills to design and develop data storage solutions to meet a client’s requirements. During the second unit, students will study the role of Information Technology (IT) systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations.

Year 13
In the Upper Sixth, students will study two units. In the first unit, students will study cyber security threats and vulnerabilities, the methods used to protect organisations against threats and managing security incidents. During the second unit, students will investigate fundamental principles in website development. They will design and develop a website in response to a client brief.

Assessment criteria:
The assessment is a combination of externally assessed examinations and teacher-marked coursework assignments. The Lower Sixth assessment comprises a 2-hour written examination and a coursework assignment. The Upper Sixth assessment is one 2 hour 15-minute written examination and a coursework assignment.
