Francesca Auchterlonie

Francesca is a Senior Student Experience Officer at King’s College London, so she now helps students with their progression from school to university. After leaving Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form, she earned an MA (Hons) in German and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh.

She is particularly grateful to the teachers at Thomas Mills who helped set her on her career path. “You may not realise it now, but you will never be surrounded by such dedicated, caring teachers than those at Thomas Mills! Make the most of those extra revision sessions or that lunch club that you have been thinking of joining as these will only put you in good stead for the future.”

Francesca adds: “Life won’t always pan out the way you want it to but it’s how you respond to those rejections or setbacks that will set you aside from the pack.

Connor Bennett

Connor went on to study journalism at the University of Brighton where he earned First Class Honours. He now works as a journalist for BBC Look East, BBC Sport and BBC Suffolk. His advice to students is to lean on the generosity of teachers who give their time to help students achieve better grades. He says: “Make the most of these people who care about your education and making you a better person.”

Connor believes you should be yourself and remember that you are in control of your destiny. Make it happen and be kind to people in the process.

Thomas Mills High School and Sixth Form - Jack Heydon

Jack Heydon

Jack is an actor and filmmaker. After leaving Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form he did a Fine Art Foundation Degree at Suffolk New College and then a BA in Musical Theatre at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He credits Thomas Mills with developing his love for creative arts. “They fostered an environment which made all forms of art at the centre of a lot of the school’s main practices. By the time I left school, I had already learnt a few whole plays, played in challenging orchestral and choral arrangements, helped organise concerts and had been allowed to be silly and creative along the way.”

His advice to students is to not rush into anything. “If you just follow what you enjoy doing, and crucially, what you are good at and passionate about – you can’t go wrong. You’re going to have to work hard either way, so you may as well do something you like!

Thomas Mills High School and Sixth Form - Mabel McCabe

Mabel McCabe

After leaving Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form with A Levels, Mabel moved onto a foundation art degree at Central Saint Martins in London before completing architecture qualifications at UCL and the Royal College of Art. Mabel says great teaching and encouragement to be independent in her learning were key attributes in her time at Thomas Mills, and she urges students to make the most of lunchtime revision sessions and study resources. She also believes that students should not just look for the university with the best course. “I would really think about everything a university or college has to offer,” Mabel adds. “Your time at university sets you up for life and it’s important to have fun alongside learning!”

Poppy Smith

Where and what did you study after leaving school — University, apprenticeship etc.

After completing Sixth Form, I secured an apprenticeship at Ensors Accountants in Saxmundham. While gaining practical experience in the office, I studied part-time to achieve my AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting. Upon completing my Level 4 apprenticeship, I was offered and gladly accepted a Level 7 apprenticeship.

Currently, I am working towards my level 7 ACCA qualification and have recently earned my Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business. With three exams remaining, I am on track to becoming a Certified Chartered Accountant in the coming months.

Looking ahead, I am considering further specialisation in areas such as Taxation. One of the key advantages of the ACCA qualification is its global recognition, offering the flexibility to work internationally. Additionally, it provides the opportunity to convert the qualification into a BSc (Hons) degree from Oxford Brookes University by completing a research and analysis project.

In my current role, I prepare accounts and tax returns for companies, partnerships, and sole traders. I also manage the Trust Registration Service for my office and take on various other responsibilities. Beyond my technical duties, I help train new students and actively participate in local career events to support others.

Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

One significant challenge I faced was failing my Financial Management exam. This experience caused me to doubt my abilities and feel anxious. However, I developed a structured study plan and committed to it, which resulted in achieving one of my highest marks in the next sitting.

How did your time at Thomas Mills prepare you for your further education or career?

Thomas Mills High School played a crucial role in shaping my career. The teachers were incredibly supportive, guiding me on how to achieve the grades needed for my apprenticeship. Careers evenings were particularly impactful, as they introduced me to potential employers, including Ensors, whom I spoke to before joining.

Did you participate in any extracurricular activities? Did these contribute to your personal/professional development?

While I didn’t participate in many extracurricular activities, I highly recommend taking part if you have the opportunity. They not only enhance your skills but also strengthen your CV.

What resources or opportunities should students take advantage of while they’re still in school?

Make the most of the opportunities such as career evenings, work experience, and other initiatives. These experiences can open many doors and greatly enhance your CV. I also encourage students to utilise the expertise and connections of the Careers Department at Thomas Mills—it’s an invaluable resource for planning your future.

If you could give one piece of advice to students preparing for life after school, what would it be?

Take every opportunity you’re given. You don’t need to excel at everything, but showing effort and willingness can take you far. Sometimes, simply giving things a try can lead to incredible growth and unexpected success.

Elizabeth Steuart Fothringham (née Waller)

Elizabeth studied at Thomas Mills between 1986 and 1993. Her A-level results enabled her to earn a place at Cambridge where she studied history then via a law conversion course became a lawyer in London. She now lives in Scotland where she manages a large rural estate.

Elizabeth says her musical education while at Thomas Mills High School and Sixth Form has stood her in good stead. “I really enjoyed doing all the orchestra playing, all the choir singing – no matter what standard you were, so long as you were enthusiastic that was enough and there would be a space for you, and you could have these wonderful experiences playing in the orchestra.”

She added: “Without Thomas Mills I wouldn’t have got the A levels that I got. I think it it gave me a great love of being enthusiastic about things and being interested in the world.”

Thomas Mills High School Alumni — Eilish

Eilish Tierney

Where and what did you study after leaving school — University, apprenticeship etc?

After leaving school, I found full-time employment at Screwfix. I worked my way up to duty manager and completed various management NVQs during my time there.

Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

While working, I faced many challenges, such as staff shortages and day-to-day responsibilities. I worked with some amazing people who made these challenges more achievable and less stressful.

How did your time at Thomas Mills prepare you for your further education or career?

My time at Mills moulded me into the person I am today. Nothing could’ve prepared me for my career, but the people I met at Mills have followed and supported this crazy and for that, I am truly grateful.

Did you participate in any extracurricular activities? Did these contribute to your personal/professional development?

Within my early years at Mills, I played Netball a little but as everyone else grew I remained short. I was never heavily involved in any sports during my time there, but my love grew once I found boxing in later life.

What resources or opportunities should students take advantage of while they’re still in school?

EVERYTHING! From the teachers to other students, these years shape your future. Being able to have the facilities, such as Mills has, is a privilege. Never say no to the opportunities that present themselves. The people you meet at school will play fundamental roles in your life.

If you could give one piece of advice to students preparing for life after school, what would it be?

Find something that makes you happy.

Tom Turner

Where and what did you study after leaving school — University, apprenticeship etc?

Broadcast Journalism BA at the University of Salford

Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

I had no idea what I wanted to do after school, I knew I thought I should go to university, but wasn’t sure. We went to a university fair at school, and I got talking to someone at Salford who told me all about the course, from then on I was hooked.

How did your time at Thomas Mills prepare you for your further education or career?

Genuinely, the support of staff and students at TMHS allowed me to have the confidence to push myself inside and outside of education. The opportunities I received whilst at school set me up for my degree, and enabled me to gain invaluable experience that I now bring into my studies.

Did you participate in any extracurricular activities? Did these contribute to your personal/professional development?

Whilst at TMHS, I formed a band with 3 other students at school. I still play in the band today, and I firmly believe I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it. It’s allowed me to have so many incredible opportunities I could only have dreamed of, and it wouldn’t have started without the support of staff and students at school.

What resources or opportunities should students take advantage of while they’re still in school?

Everything. You never know what you might enjoy until you try it, and if an opportunity presents itself, see where it takes you.

If you could give one piece of advice to students preparing for life after school, what would it be?

Be yourself and pursue something you enjoy, whatever it is.
