Library

At Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form we believe that our Library should fuel our pupils and students’ imagination and thirst for knowledge, inspiring them to learn, no matter what their situation or background.

Our Library is a working space occupied by pupils and students across the age range. It is heavily used by members of the Sixth Form as part of their private study and the upstairs desks are reserved especially for this use. Staff are also welcome to use the space if they need a quiet work environment and can borrow any of the resources for educational or recreational use.

The room has fully networked computers with Internet access, connected to laser and colour printers. There are over 12,000 books and a small selection of magazines available for loan. Additionally, the upstairs of the Library has a range of resources relating to careers guidance and Higher Education.

Our librarian also offers drop-in referencing sessions for sixth form students and training on JSTOR, Massolit and PressReader.

Students can access our Library catalogue and browse our collection of books using the following link: LibPaths.

Parents can also keep up-to-date with Library news by reading our termly newsletter or by following us on our Facebook page.

Clubs and special events

We pride ourselves on the wide range of clubs we run during the week and our wonderful array of Library Activities. During the week children can get involved in an array of Book Clubs, Dungeons and Dragons, Creative Writing, Craft, a Film Club, Quiz Club, Coding Club, Chess Club and Comic Books and Cards.

Special events which take place during the year include the following:

Book Mastermind

Each year we team up with other schools in the Suffolk area to organise and run a county Book Mastermind competition. School heats run at the start of February each year and are open to Year 7, 8 and 9 students. The winner of the Heats goes on to compete at county level in May.

Book Week

Every October the Library and English Department join forces for a week of literary celebration.

We take a whole-school approach to book week and celebrate fiction and non-fiction books alike! Students get involved with author visits, form time literary challenges, a Book Week Bake Off, special assemblies and more! Highlights also include a Book Speed Dating event with our Year 7 Accelerated Reader Classes (to promote the importance of reading for pleasure) and a special Year 8 Book Tasting Awards. We also run a Readathon, giving our keen readers the chance to raise money for charity and celebrate reading for pleasure.

Author Visits

Children who have yearly author visits are twice as likely to read above the expected level for their age and enjoy reading for pleasure. We ensure that our Year 7 and 8 students are able to get involved in at least one in-person author visit a year in October and that all years have access to digital events and interviews to inspire them throughout the year!

Comic Convention

We run a school Comic Convention each year in order to celebrate everything Graphic Novel, Computer Game, Comic Book and Anime based. Typically, students get to meet experts working in gaming or computer studies, try video gaming devices from the past and present and Cosplay their favourite characters.

We also have several Sixth Form-run stalls which aim to raise money for local charities (or charities that our students feel strongly about). Last year we raised an impressive £860 over two dates; charities we donated to included Outreach Youth (supported by BBC Children in Need), Suffolk Mind, Switchboard and UNICEF (towards projects to help Pakistan, Afghanistan and Ukraine).

Thank you to BLOC (Suffolk Libraries) for loaning us equipment for the event and to our Sixth Form and Year 11 Library event teams for helping to organise.

Book Fair Take Over

Our Sixth Formers are given the opportunity to run a Scholastic Book Fair for the Library each December in order to get more experience for their CVs and UCAS applications.

We offer training and experience in roles such as customer service, marketing, advertising and finance. Positions are advertised in late September and we start training and planning in late October.
