The Thomas Mills High School and Sixth Form Spanish curriculum aims to build upon the foundations of language learning established at Key Stage 2 while fostering an appreciation of Hispanic cultures and communities. Through the study of carefully sequenced phonics, vocabulary and grammar, pupils develop the substantive knowledge needed to understand and communicate in Spanish. At the same time, they develop disciplinary knowledge through the four key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Building on their prior language-learning experiences, pupils learn to understand and communicate personal and factual information, express simple opinions and begin to justify their ideas. They develop confidence in applying core grammatical structures, recognising patterns within the language and making connections between Spanish and English. Through discussion, role-play, translation and practical language application, pupils become increasingly accurate and independent communicators.
