Student Stories

Meet Kevin – Philosopher, Economist and Leader

“Without a doubt, the pinnacle of my seven years
at Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form has been the sixth form experience. Playing key roles as Head Student and House Official has allowed me to serve the wider school community. Thomas Mills has been more than just a school; the teachers and peers here have become like family to me, shaping me into the person I am today. The sense of community at Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form is truly remarkable – it’s a feeling of belonging that goes above and beyond. It has been a true blessing to attend this exceptional school.” – Kevin Sujith

Kevin’s passion for Philosophy shines through all that he does as a thoughtful and reflective student, and he plans to continue his study of this fascinating topic, having been offered places at prestigious institutions such as Durham University. One of our Head Students, Kevin has been called upon to deliver speeches to a range of audiences, one such highlight being his keynote speech at our Awards Evening which served as an inspiration to our lower school pupils on the importance of taking opportunities in education. Kevin also played a key role in coordinating the successful events run on the school’s annual Charity Day, one of the many occasions in our calendar that enables students to reflect the school’s ethos and values – qualities that Kevin displays in abundance.

Meet Eva – Musician, Innovator and Team Player

‘‘I have been at Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form since year 7 and enjoy the variety of extra-curricular activities that the school offers. There are so many to experience: the range of sporting opportunities, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, many clubs in the school library as well as numerous trips, both day and residential. I have particularly enjoyed being part of the school orchestra, string group and string quartet. These opportunities, alongside taking part in the annual school production and other ensembles out of school, have helped to prepare me for my aim of being a professional musician in the future.” – Eva Mawson

Eva is a delightful student – the embodiment of the ethos of Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form. Since joining the school in year 7, she has thrown herself wholeheartedly into the extra-curricular opportunities on offer. Her considerable musical talents have seen her participate in the first orchestra, the cello ensemble, the string group and the Mills Quartet, as well as various roles in school productions. Eva is a member of the Suffolk Youth Orchestra and Aldeburgh Young Musicians, volunteers at a local primary school and is learning to drive in her spare time. Currently, in year 12, she has applied to serve the school as a house official and peer mentor, utilising these leadership roles to support and encourage younger pupils. As such, she is an excellent role model.

Meet Rose – Ambitious, Determined and Promising Broadcaster

“I have no doubt that choosing Thomas Mills High School & Sixth Form for my sixth form education, after attending Debenham High School, was the best decision I could have made. There is a genuine sense of community here, and this made the transition to sixth form feel seamless for me. I have received many amazing opportunities, including serving as a Senior Student and a trip to Nice with my French class. When applying for university, the support from staff has helped so much and I will always be grateful I chose Thomas Mills Sixth Form for my post-16 studies.” – Rose Courteen

Rose is a great example of a student who has thrived on the experiences and opportunities that Thomas Mills Sixth Form has offered her since joining us from Debenham High School in year 12. Her determined attitude has enabled her to succeed in her studies and receive an unconditional offer to study for a degree in Journalism at the University of Salford, right in the heart of Media City. The support and friendships Rose forged from the outset of her time in the sixth form encouraged her to run for the position of one of our Senior Students. Since then, she has acted as a great ambassador to those prospective students wishing to join us from other schools.

Meet Ruben – Guitarist, Fashion Icon and Aspiring Globetrotter

Ruben is a charming and self-effacing student who is considerate to others and something of a fashion icon. His creativity is reflected in his musical talents as well as his dress sense. A keen skateboarder, he hopes to travel widely and surf his way around the world. He has flourished within the sixth form at Thomas Mills and learned the key life skills of independence and perseverance in order to succeed.

Meet Ruby – Artist, Music Lover and Climate Campaigner

“Thomas Mills is a school where your individual creativity can flourish. There is so much positivity in students expressing themselves. This creates a learning environment where all can engage and explore their interests because there is such a wide variety of activities ranging from sports to music and the arts alongside academic opportunities. Every student
can find something that will help them develop their personal character but also show them how to respect individuals too.” – Ruby Pottruff

A unique individual, Ruby embraces everything in life with passion, kindness and flair. Her musical talents have seen her undertake leading roles in school productions and she relishes her artistic abilities. When asked what she aspired to do in the future, Ruby responded “travel, become a blacksmith, design Celtic jewellery, live in Cornwall and paint tin mines.” This typifies Ruby’s personality, whose claim to fame is serving Keira Knightley a flat white…

Meet Tom – Musician, Historian and Legend

“My time at Thomas Mills will always be defined by the two years I spent in the
Sixth Form. I was lucky enough to gain many incredible opportunities through participation in the wider elements of upper school life, whilst relationships formed with my peers encouraged me to become a more confident and sociable person. The sense of community within Thomas Mills is genuine and exceptional, and this is highlighted particularly within the Sixth Form.” – Tom Turner

When asked to describe himself in three words, Tom chose ‘musician, historian and legend.’ These are not idle boasts, however. Tom is Thomas Mills personified – a true ambassador for the school, always willing to engage with and support our school community. He has worked exceptionally hard at his studies in order to realise his ambition to study journalism at university. Alongside this, Tom is the lead singer of ikarus, a talented indie-pop band which has had considerable local and national success, performing for BBC Introducing and at Latitude Festival 2022. Thus, we think his legend status is justified…

Meet Maddie – Geographer, Keen Talker and Difference Maker

When asked to describe herself and her interests, Maddie said “Geography runs in my veins.” This may well be true as Maddie has been offered a place to study the subject at the University of Oxford. Forever modest, she lists her hobbies as knitting and talking – and yet aspires to be bilingual and to make a difference in the world. We have every confidence that she will do both.
